
MASH’s website is rich with free resources for sober living home providers. MASH maintains a large, public list of members with detailed information about rent payments as well as deposits. This information is very helpful when conducting market research on existing sober living in the state. The rental income information, in particular, is very useful for predicting profit margins. The Next Step
Assess each potential resident’s strengths and needs, and determine whether the level of support available within the residence is appropriate. Provide assistance to the residents with appropriate referrals. Court users who need sober housing or transportation support must have an open case or have court involvement that is current or within the past year at a Project NORTH court. Individuals are required to meet with a Navigator for an in-person intake to ensure that they meet the sober housing and transportation eligibility requirements.

The Minnesota Association of Sober Homes, Inc., or M.A.S.H. for short, was formed in the summer of 2007 in an attempt to form a unified voice for owners of sober houses in situations where a public voice became necessary. MASH is a NARR state affiliate for recovery residences.

What’s the difference between a sober home and a recovery residence? In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences —formerly known as halfway houses — alcohol rehab are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment. Sober homes provide mutual support, emphasize independent living skills, and depend on peer leadership.

- While the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) in Massachusetts is responsible for certifying all addiction treatment programs in the state, it does not certify sober living homes.

Graceland Recovery is a structured house that offers a safe transitional platform where women in recovery thrive and learn to grow into their full potential. Women are provided 12 step work, volunteer work, yoga, writing, meditation, crafts, cooking, academic and career support. At Graceland Recovery, women are expected to embrace a high level of accountability with an emphasis on independant living.

In Massachusetts, these homes—especially those certified by the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH)—help residents stay sober through peer support, accountability, and community. The Residential Assistance Program (RAP) is a critical funding source for individuals seeking financial support for sober living in Massachusetts. The payment is made directly to the sober living organization with documented start and end dates. Rise Again has an application process for our scholarship program. Board members vet each application through references provided (i.e. case manager) as well as a call with the applicant. Applicants will only be approved to enter a sober living house that is MASH mash sober living certified and «Rise Again» approved.
